Like Water – CD

Să pui cap la cap toate culorile pe care le cunoşti şi să îmbălsămezi în ele cuvintele pe care le-ai auzit dintotdeauna şi ţi-a plăcut să le auzi, apoi să le aşterni frumos, nu pe hârtie, nu pe pânză, nu pe asfalt, ci pe urechile oamenilor pe care îi iubeşti, fără ca măcar să îi cunoşti. Apoi să culegi, picătură cu picătură, fiecare bob de fericire pe care lucrarea ta l-a adus şi să îl sădeşti cu grija, nu în pământ, ci într-un album de muzică.

Cam asta au facut Pedro Negrescu şi Luiza Zan cu samânţa albumului Like water. Găsiţi fragmente din muzici de tot felul, în mai multe limbi vorbite pe la noi şi pe aiurea. Omogen prin felul interpretării, liberă şi sinceră, acest album nu poate fi încadrat pur şi simplu într-un anumit gen muzical. Cei doi muzicieni şi-au deschis sufletele şi urechile unul către celălalt şi au interpretat în faţa unui public nu foarte numeros (căci acest album reprezintă o înregistrare a unui concert live în fostul club Art Jazz Club din Bucureşti), un dialog cald şi plin de pasiune, care a trecut prin teme precum “timpul”, “pământul”, “rădăcinile”, “apa”, sau “iubirea”.

Despre toate este vorba şi, în acelaşi timp, exista suficient timp de respiro pentru ca fiecare ascultător să-şi aducă propria contribuţie la peisajul sonor care se conturează piesă cu piesă. În mare parte jazz standards regândite, piesele cântate de cei doi muzicieni îmbracă forme libere, se mulează pe structuri deschise, alese cu măiestrie pe baza instinctului de moment şi a inter-comunicării dintre cei doi. Un album viu, liber şi măiastru interpretat de contrabasistul, compozitorul, dirijorul şi versatilul instrumentist Pedro Negrescu şi de vocea calmă, caldă şi viu colorată a Luizei Zan.

Put together all the colors that you know and dip into them the words that you’ve always heard and loved to hear them, too, then place them nicely, not on paper, not on canvas, not on asphalt, but on the ears of the people you love, without even knowing who they are. Then pick, drop by drop, every bit of happiness that your work brought with it and plant it carefully, not in the ground, but in a music album.

That’s about what Pedro Negrescu and Luiza Zan did with the seed of their album, Like water. One can find fragments of various kinds of music, in several languages spoken hereabout and elsewhere. Homogenous in interpretation, one which is free and sincere, this album cannot be placed within a music genre just like that. The two musicians opened their souls and their ears to each other and played in front of a not so numerous audience (because this album is the recording of a live performance that took place in the former Art Jazz Club in Bucharest) a warm and passionate dialogue on themes such as “time”, “earth”, “roots”, “water” or “love”.

It’s about all of these and, at the same time, there is enough space for every listener to bring their own input to the sound landscape which reveals itself, song by song. Many of the songs are re-invented jazz standards, but the two musicians play in a free-form, open structure manner, choosing wisely based on the frame instinct and the interplay between the two. An album full of life, free and played with mastery by the double bass player/composer/conductor and versatile instrumentalist Pedro Negrescu and the warm, calm and vividly colored voice of Luiza Zan.
