Enescu plays Bach / Sonate & Partite – 2CD

Motto: You’re never done with Bach… His music is that of my soul (George Enescu)

THE POLYPHONIC VOCATION
This fourth Enescu recording proposed by Soft Records consists of a new and captivating discographic configuration of the complete Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by J. S. Bach, a veritable polyphonic interpretative model, where the organic link between the discourse’s elements of structure and color are revealed especially through emotional meaning, the atmosphere creating sensitivity, and the complexity of original thought transposed into artistic fact. With a peerless aesthetic attitude, determined, naturally, by veneration for the great cantor in Leipzig. To speak about George Enescu the violinist – wrote the great musicians of the era – seems almost impossible. That is because that particular instrument, in the hand of the maestro, “seemed to lose its material content, becoming a means for melding everything into a river of elevating sonorities, with a purity of style mirrored in infinite gradations and with an inexhaustible phonic quality” (G. Enacovici). Yehudi Menuhin himself places him in the world of stirring beauty of counterpoint blending, confessing that “Enescu had the power to intone every note on the page as if it had been reinvented, and to play Bach in a way that spread his magic all around”. To be perpetually dynamic within the score, superimposing, sometimes discreetly, other times spectacularly, melodic lines only to then individualize them and blend them into a sublime simplicity of musical utterance. With an unsuspected strength of expression, born out of those predictable, yet surprising contrasts of movement and character typical of those Baroque genres. And thus to give the impression that you are listening “not to a violin, but to an organ or the entire string orchestra, sometimes with flute and trumpet effects” (A. Alessandrescu). Therefore, a special approach to Bach’s unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas, considered by numerous critics to be a veritable cultural testament in Euterpe’s world, an act of generosity in violin confession, and maybe even a unique form of introversion, of intimacy in spaces of sound…
